In a initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
