During a clear statement to the West, Leader Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to provide “uninterrupted” deliveries of energy resources to India. The announcement came when Putin and Modi met in Delhi and affirmed their partnership were “resilient to foreign coercion.”

A Message Aimed at the United States

The statement, made on Friday, was widely seen to be targeted at the United States and its allies, which have repeatedly attempted to urge New Delhi into scaling back its longstanding links with Moscow. The backdrop is in response to recent Washington's moves, such as the introduction of trade penalties against Indian goods over its acquisition of Moscow's energy exports.

“Russia is a dependable source of energy resources and anything required for the growth of India’s energy sector,” Putin remarked. “Moscow stands willing to continue securing the steady flow of fuel for the booming Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, while not naming energy specifically, echoed the focus by stating that “energy security has been a strong and vital cornerstone of the Indo-Russian partnership.”

Challenging US Interference

In the lead-up to the summit, via a media interview, Putin had questioned American pressure on India's dealings with Russia. Putin stated, “If the US has the right to buy our atomic materials, then why can't India have the same privilege?”

This trip marked his first trip to India since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, and both sides engaged in a visible effort to demonstrate that the personal rapport between the two leaders was undisturbed.

A Warm Reception

Employing an rare gesture, Modi personally greeted Putin upon his arrival. Both leaders exchanged a hearty embrace like close allies before having a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.

The Indian prime minister referred to India's relationship with Russia as “a beacon” and added it was “built on reciprocal esteem and strong faith.”

Strengthening Defence and Economic Cooperation

The meeting yielded multiple significant pacts in the fields of military and economic cooperation. A cornerstone agreement was the finalization of an economic cooperation programme that runs to 2030, which sets a goal to increase twofold commerce to one hundred billion dollars annually by the target year.

Furthermore vowed to restructure their defence ties. Even as Russia continues to be India's primary source of weapons, this role has reduced lately as India has sought diversify its procurement.

Their communique stressed cooperation in the joint production of cutting-edge military systems, although explicit details of systems like the Su-57 fighter jet were left out.

Overall, both nations reiterated that amid the “present intricate, strained, and volatile international environment, Russian-Indian ties continue to be strong to outside forces.”
