Milei Statuette, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on unwanted presents might be seen as slightly impolite – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Sale

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction a reported 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures on official trips. This unusual assortment is said to contain objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

The presents, combined, are valued at around €800,000. The plan is to sold to the highest bidder by a Italian fine art auction house. A date has not been finalized, although the goal is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the revenue going to non-profit organizations.

Palazzo Chigi Collection

The presents are said to be locked away in a storage room on the third floor of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been sitting unused over a long period.

A complete inventory remains officially released, but partial details were revealed earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was presented in parliament. The discussion raised whether a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.

A Global Array of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • Various other items including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts were the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.

Political Context

The prime minister has received praise, particularly from her allies, with building relationships with global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the world stage once again.

This charitable initiative symbolizes a unconventional way to manage the state presents that are collected during a leader's tenure.
